Formative assessment tool 1: Todaysmeet

Todaysmeet is a free backchanneling tool that can be used as a formative assessment tool. It is a kind of ‘private Twitter’ for your classroom.

Formative assessment tool 2: Plickers

Plickers is a free and innovative student response system using QR codes and a mobile app. Only the teacher needs to have access to a networked device. Students only have a card to answer questions. This short description doesn’t do it justice. You have to check it out.

Formative assessment tool 3: Kahoot!

Kahoot! is a free student response system with a gamification twist. Students are very engaged using this tool. A must check.

Formative assessment tool 4: InfuseLearning

Important note: although this tool was great, it has now been discontinued by its owners.

InfuseLearning is a free student response system, with a great set of options. Not only InfuseLearning offers a wide range of question types, it also allows students to listen to questions and answers, as well as get an automatic translation of questions and answers. It’s hard to believe it’s free!

Formative assessment tool 5: Socrative

Socrative is another free student response system, which has fairly recently received an update. Socrative has a comprehensive set of reports, but I personally prefer using it for simple exit tickets.

Formative assessment tool 6: Educanon

Educanon turns online videos (e.g. Youtube) into active learning experiences, by adding questions, extra information, etc. This tool is ideal for the flipped classroom.
